Rose Colored Horeses Book

About the Book

What in God’s name are we thinking?”

“Why do we think this is fun?”

Roses Colored Horses CoverThese are just a couple of the questions Jo Ann Heppermann asks and answers in her first book, Rose Colored Horses.

As you travel with her through the ups and downs of a year in her life, you will come to see why Jo Ann believes in God, why she owns and races Thoroughbred race horses and why she sometimes thinks it is fun.  Through the year’s journey, Jo Ann gives you an insight into her humor as well as the faith, grit and determination that make up the core of this crazed horsewoman. You will laugh, you will feel Jo Ann’s pain and you will cheer for both the horses and the humans.  And you will come to understand why she believes hope springs eternal, particularly if you look at life–and horses–through rose colored glasses.

Jo Ann and her husband, Ken, have owned and syndicated Thoroughbred race horses for eleven years. They have experienced the joys of winning and the agonies of defeat and have lived to tell about it. Jo Ann taught school, worked as an administrator in a law firm and practiced law for eighteen years before hanging up her shingle to follow her horses.  She and Ken have two sons, one daughter-in-law and two perfect grandchildren.

Rose Colored Horses is a humorous look at the ups and downs of owning a race horse, told through the eyes of a woman who gave up her corporate legal career to seek adventure at the track. By the time we get done following JoAnn and her horses through her “year-in-the-life” story, you will know the business, the horses, and their owner — and you most likely will want to buy a race horse of your own.” – Jean Becker, Chief of Staff to President George H. W. Bush

Rose Colored Horses gives an unusual front-row view of the nitty gritty of the horse racing business, from dreams and celebrations, to broken bones and tough business decisions.  The author is an Every Woman, easy to understand and plain-spoken in her daily memoirs.” – David Tachau, Attorney, Tachau Meek PLC

  1. Hi Joanne, Love your book! I can see you speaking the words as I read. Laughing often. It goes really well with Bushmill’s Irish Wisky.

I’ll miss your gang greatly this Saturday :-(

I’m sending money to bet at the party for 3M. Wondering if you know Patti Reeves.

    Best Regards,

Hey there Jo Ann. I have 80 pages to go but wanted to send a quick note. Avoiding the temptation to jump ahead has been a momumental task. You have me anxious to see how this turns out. I can’t wait to flip the final pages of your outstanding book. The balance (Faith – Family – Focus; i.e horses) you have shown is beautiful.
I hope BAT steps up to the plate; Stay Alert peforms so well that you are forced to change his name to More Alert and Cape Town Bay avoids being shipped off to either South Africa or the Chesapeake Bay. I will certainly tell my horse loving friends. Happy Mothers Day!

The only way your book could have been any better is if the sequel … Still Chasing the Derby … hit the bookstore tomorrow. Well done old friend!

  4. Jo Ann Heppermann says:

Tom and Phil, thanks for the comments! I’m glad you enjoyed the book–and to think you said nice things without my agreeing to pay you! To “Kids” — thanks for your interest. At the present time, Rose Colored Horses is only available through the web, or if you live in Louisville–I deliver!

  5. Jean Sutton says:

This book is TOTALLY ENJOYABLE READING!!! I have laughed so hard I have snorted (and not many books can make me do that!). This is well written, inspiring and of course, FUNNY! I don’t get much time to read these days, but look forward to getting home from work to delve back into this book. I even catch myself chuckling out loud during the day when I think about some of my favorite funny parts! LOL. Great job, JoAnn

  6. Gretta Manni says:

Just finished reading your book cover to cover on our road trip East last week. Love when I do that because it makes me feel smarter when I finish a book. Ha.

Enjoyed your story and the different spellings of BAt. Good luck with your horses and Good luck with your book sales.

  7. Jane White says:

My good friend Kay Holman gave me a copy of your book in June, and I have just begun reading it on an escape of sorts/vacation in MD — the 2 stallions I promote are almost done, my own mares almost pregnant, and I left the racing to trainer-hubby at Parx.

Thank you so much! Am enjoying your book thoroughly,
have also lived all the ups and downs you describe so well– mine began in 1982 which teaching high school chemistry in Baltimore and continue to this day in PA.

I love your sense of humor and wish you many trips to the winner’s circle.
    Sincerely, Jane
